Interim report reveals critical challenges in England’s maternity services

A new interim report from the National Maternity and Neonatal Investigation has been published today, highlighting serious systemic failings in NHS maternity services across England. The report reflects evidence from thousands of women, families, and staff, and identifies key issues including safety concerns, workforce shortages, racism, poor accountability, and inconsistent care quality.

The findings underscore that the maternity system is failing too many women, babies, and families, and that urgent action is needed to improve service delivery, strengthen oversight, and address inequalities.

The report is an interim publication, with final recommendations expected in spring 2026. It aims to guide NHS leaders, policymakers, and sector partners in implementing reforms that make maternity care safer, more equitable, and more responsive to the needs of women, children, and families.
