New report on community provision for older people

The Centre for Ageing Better has released Raising the bar on strength and balance, a report exploring the importance of community provision, including from faith-based organisations, in preventing falls for older people. The findings highlight the various ways in which community organisations are contributing, from raising awareness of what can be done to prevent falls and encouraging uptake of health programmes, to developing effective referral processes and ensuring outcomes are properly monitored and evaluated.

The evidence that funding strength and balance programmes in the community is cost effective is clear, yet such programmes are often underfunded and there is a significant difference between what the evidence says and what is delivered on the ground. Local services do not always join up and work together, leaving a patchwork provision.
