Charity tax reliefs up to £3.31bn in 2014/15
The value of tax relief to charities increased almost 8 per cent to £3.31bn in 2014/15, according to new figures published by HMRC.
Annual tax statistics show business rates relief accounted for the highest proportion of the relief, at £1.64bn. Gift Aid followed at £1.2bn, with an additional £300m in VAT reliefs and £170m in Stamp Duty Land Tax relief.
The Gift Aid Small Donations scheme, extensions to which were announced in the last Budget, returned £21m.
Charity Tax Group chair John Hemming welcomed the increase, and said the group will continue to work with the next government to increase eligible Gift Aid uptake. The group will also make “strong representations” to the consultation on the future of business rates.
