Food Banks are filling gaps left by Jobcentres and the DWP

Chris Mould, chairman of the Trussell Trust, a provider of 400 food banks, has written an article for The Guardian questioning the Department of Work & Pensions’ claims that food banks are not part of the welfare system and that other means were available to support people in need.  Mr Mould highlighted the work that his organisation has been doing, providing emergency food to over 700,000 people in 2013, and the fact that standing in the gap of provision is often something voluntary sector organisations do, but that more needed to be done so that families are not left in food poverty, and called for an inquiry into its causes and what can be done to solve the problem.
