Workplace Giving unveils microdonation payroll giving scheme

Workplace Giving UK has launched a new payroll giving initiative to get employees to round down their net pay to the nearest pound and donate a maximum of 99p to charity per payday.

The Big Charity Whip Round was announced yesterday and the company hopes that it will engage employees who either don’t want to, or don’t have time for more demanding fundraising activity such as a sponsored event. No employee will donate more than 99p per payday.

All the money raised will go the employer’s nominated charity and charities can claim gift aid on the donations. Companies signing up to the scheme will have to pay a one-off set-up fee of £299.99 and then a monthly admin fee of between £4.99 and £14.99, depending on the size of its workforce.

Peter O’Hara, managing director of Workplace Giving UK, said: “Over the past ten years we have been asked many times about ‘microdonation’ schemes from pay. We therefore wanted to come up with a simple, low-cost solution which would deliver the most money to a company’s charity partner.”

He added that: “We are finding that engagement with the scheme is 30 per cent and above so a workforce of 5,000 could be raising in excess of £9,000 per year just from their odd net pennies.  When you multiply this out to the entire UK workforce the amounts raised could be huge.”

Last week the Treasury’s plans to reform payroll giving received a lukewarm reception from the sector, with many hoping the government would have gone further.

Since launching in 2010, the Pennies microdonation scheme, which works with retailers to encourage shoppers to round up their shop when paying by card, has raised more than £1.5m.
