Grants are available to not-for-profit groups and organisations for projects that benefit the residents of Matlock and district, including the relief of distress, sickness and assisting older people.

Value Notes

Approximately £7,000 from interest on capital funds is available to distribute each year.

The level of grants awarded varies and depends on the demonstrated need. On average they are between £150 and £200.

Extended Description

The Derbyshire Dales District Council is a Trustee of the Ernest Bailey Charity and administers the annual grant making procedure.

The Charity provides funds for the general benefit of the inhabitants of Matlock and surrounding areas.  Each year the interest earned on the Charity's capital investment is given out in grants.

Key Criteria

Voluntary and community groups and organisation, clubs, and societies may apply. 

Applicants must be located in and undertaking projects in one or more of the following areas:

  • Bonsall.
  • Cromford.
  • Darley Dale.
  • Matlock.
  • Matlock Bath.
  • Northwood and Tinkersley.
  • South Darley.
  • Tansley.

Eligible Expenditure

Grants are made available for specific purposes, towards a range of projects, focusing on:

  • The relief of the aged and poor.
  • The relief of distress and sickness.
  • Facilities for recreation and other leisure time activities.
  • Educational facilities.

Match Funding Restrictions

Match funding is not a stipulated requirement of this scheme.


Although there are no specific exclusions cited in the guidelines for this scheme, those wishing to apply are advised to liaise with Derbyshire District Council in the first instance regarding eligibility.

Applications can be submitted either online through the Council website or by downloading and posting the completed form to the Council.
