Three new reports on partnership working between faith and local government.

FaithAction Welcomes the New Archbishop of Canterbury

Today, The Queen formally approved the nomination of Justin Welby, the current bishop of Durham, to the position of Archbishop of Canterbury. He will assume the role at Canterbury Cathedral on the 21st March 2013, and will succeed Dr Rowan Williams, who has served in the role since 2003.

Speaking at a press conference at Lambeth Palace, Welby said:

“To be nominated to this post is both astonishing and exciting. It is something I never expected, and the last few weeks have been a very strange experience. It is exciting because we are at one of those rare points where the tide of events is turning, and the church nationally, including the Church of England has great opportunities to match its very great but often hidden strengths. I feel a massive sense of privilege at being one of those responsible for the leadership of the church in a time of spiritual hunger, when our network of parishes and churches and schools and above all people means that we are facing the toughest issues in the toughest place.”

Aged 56, Justin Welby has been a member of the clergy for 20 years. Educated at Eton and having read law and history at Cambridge, Welby spent 11 years working in the oil industry until he quit in 1987 in response to what he says was a call from God to be ordained. Becoming a priest in 1992, Welby quickly rose through the ranks within the Church. He has served as Co-Director and Canon Residentiary of the International Centre of Reconciliation at Coventry Cathedral (2002-2007), as Dean of Liverpool Cathedral (2007-2011), and finally as Bishop of Durham (2011-), the fourth most important post in the Church, before becoming Archbishop of Canterbury.

FaithAction would like to welcome Justin Welby to his new role as Archbishop of Canterbury. We look forward to the chance to work together for the benefit of every faith-based organisation across England.
