Extended Description

The Social Enterprise Awards are run by Social Enterprise UK in partnership with O2 and the national UK social enterprise support bodies – Social Economy Network (Northern Ireland), Scottish Social Enterprise Coalition and Wales Cooperative Centre.

The awards are made to recognise and reward outstanding performance by the UK's social enterprises and individuals working for the benefit of social enterprises.

For 2012 there are a total of 14 awards open to social enterprises and individuals from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales – more than in previous years.

For the first time there is an international social enterprise of the year category, which is open to overseas organisations as well as UK based organisations that deliver extensively abroad.

The first five categories listed below will have regional heats in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, with the winners of each heat competing in the UK finals:

  1. Social Enterprise Leader
  2. Start-Up Social Enterprise
  3. UK Social Enterprise
  4. Social Enterprise Supporter
  5.  Youth-Led Social Enterprise (This award is not open to social enterprises based in Wales)

The remaining nine UK categories are open to all, with no heats.

  1. Evidence of Impact
  2. Social Entrepreneur
  3. Social Enterprise Town
  4. Social Enterprise Champion
  5. Finance/Investment Deal
  6. Employee/Volunteer
  7. Social Enterprise Transition
  8. Innovation: Best new product/service
  9. International Social Enterprise

The deadline for applications is midnight on 26 August 2012.


Key Criteria

Application is open to all UK-based (except the international category) social enterprises of any size that:

  1. Trades primarily for social and/or environmental purposes
  2. Whose social purpose is evidenced in its governing documents
  3. Earns at least 50% of their income through trading activity (this can be 25% for the Youth Led Social Enterprise, Start Up or Social Enterprise Town awards)
  4. Commits at least 50% of their profits towards meeting social purpose or is reinvested back into the business
     

Restrictions

Although no specific exclusions are cited in the scheme's guidelines, potential applicants are advised to contact the sponsor to ensure that nominations meet the eligibility criteria.

Application Procedure

Applications are managed on a national basis by the relevant national social enterprise support body. National winners will automatically go forward to the overall UK awards.
