Three new reports on partnership working between faith and local government.

Norwich foodbank attempts record food collection

Norwich Foodbank is aiming to stage the largest supermarket collection of food ever-held in the UK at Asda in Norwich on Saturday May 19 as part of the Foodbank Awareness Week from May 13-19.

The record-breaking attempt is aiming to collect an amazing two tonnes of food in one single day.

Foodbank project manager, Grant Habershon, said: “Dave Lennox, the store manager at Asda Norwich has supported Norwich foodbank ever since we set up. Being aware of our need for food in the summer months, he suggested we held a large collection as part of our Awareness Week, he also told us that his store would make a food donation on the day.

“We experienced an extra large demand for food last August because the safety net of ‘free’ school meals for needy families does not exist over the summer holidays. This, combined with reduced food donations because many people and organizations are having summers breaks, meant that last summer our foodbank’s food supply hit a critical level. This collection at Asda coupled with our Foodbank Awareness Week activities we hope will generate the additional food donations we need over the next few months.”

Foodbank will be collecting between 8am and 8pm on May 19 and want volunteers for 90-minute sessions – five people per shift. City College, Broadland District Council and a team from the Cromer foodbank have already volunteered to do a shift and Grant is looking for other groups to put a team together. Individual volunteers are also more than welcome to come forward to form part of a team.

In the last 12 months, Norwich foodbank has collected an incredible 38.5 tonnes of food, including donations from 87 local churches.

Grant said: “The rest of the community has also really rallied around with supermarkets, schools, businesses and other organisations giving tremendous support. We had over 100 volunteers and provided food to 3,300 local people in crisis in the year. This will increase to well over 4,000 in the next 12 months.”

Other events during Foodbank Awareneww Wekk will include: Brownies sleep over; Costa Cafe week long promotion and Cafe Church on Sunday; new Distribution Centre to open in Swaffham; Sports Quiz Night; coffee mornings and special collections.
