Pears Foundation launches first phase of national philanthropy campaign

A 12-month campaign to get people giving more money, time or energy to good causes has been launched to charities had its initial launch today by the Pears Foundation.

The Give More campaign, announced last year, is a national campaign that was first discussed in the Philanthropy Review, the sector-led inquiry into philanthropy that published its ‘call to action’ in June.

The campaign will ask people to sign a pledge on its website to give more to charity over the next year. The goal is for 500,000 people to sign up.

People and groups supporting Give More include Martyn Lewis, chair of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, Dame Mary Marsh, director of the Clore Social Leadership Programme, the charities Scope and Marie Curie Cancer Care, and the companies BT and Moonpig.

The campaign is being chaired by Trevor Pears, executive chair of the Pears Foundation. The Pears family has funded the campaign with £1m.

"It’s a rallying call to action for everyone, and you can be as specific or general as you like," said Pears. "Charities are struggling terribly – need is up, resources are down. Rather than create a new charity that competes with the 190,000 existing ones, this is an attempt to lift the tide for all ships."

A spokeswoman for the campaign said it had been launched to charities and other relevant organisations today to encourage them to get their supporters to sign up to the campaign. She said it would launch to the public in April and would run for 12 months from then.
