Search for next Charity Commission chair to begin in new year

The search for a successor to Dame Suzi Leather, chair of the Charity Commission, will begin in the new year, according to Nick Hurd, the Minister for Civil Society.

Leather succeeded Geraldine Peacock as chair in 2006. She was appointed on a three-year contract, which was renewed for another three years in 2009. Her term is due to expire in July.

Hurd revealed that the start of the recruitment process was imminent in response to a written question from Gareth Thomas, his Labour shadow.

"The recruitment of a successor will begin in the new year," said Hurd in his response. "As a public appointment, the recruitment process will be conducted in line with the requirements of the Commissioner for Public Appointments."

The commissioner regulates the processes by which ministers make appointments to the boards of national and regional public bodies.

Sir David Normington, who was permanent secretary at the Home Office from 2006 to 2010, is the current commissioner.
